One of our members - Lester Hillman - will be giving a talk on the exact 250th anniversary of the death of John Harrison, exploring the life and local connections of the man whose invention of the marine chronometer transformed the eighteenth century, enabling safe and efficient navigation, and opening up new maritime opportunities, markets and trade.
The venue of the talk is Camden Local Studies & Archives Centre - just a stone's throw from the Red Lion Square location where Harrison lived and worked most of his life. His burial place is at St John's Church, Hampstead where we used to hold our talks.

Founded 1899 - Registered Charity No 278114
We aim to promote an interest in all branches of science both locally in Hampstead and across the wider community, and to cater for the layman as well as for those with specialist knowledge.
Donations support everything we do and we are very grateful for any and all contributions. We accept donations for the Society online via stripe as well as at events or at the Observatory.
We have an astronomy section, run an observatory and a programme of talks on various scientific topics in Hampstead, North West London, but have members from all over London and beyond.
The Society is run and staffed entirely by volunteers, who give their time and energy to supporting the Society and its aims.
We post news on facebook and maintain a page on eventbrite for ticketed events such as visits to the Observatory.
