The Society was established in 1899 to study and encourage popular interest in all aspects of Science. The members share a general interest in Science and Technology but are, as often as not, laymen and laywomen rather than professional scientists. The Society meets monthly from September to June to hear guest speakers, usually on a Thursday. Our Observatory close to Whitestone Pond on Hampstead Heath contains an electronically controlled six-inch refracting telescope and is the only one in London generally available to the members of the public; it is open, weather permitting, from September to April, on Friday and Saturday from 8 pm to l0 pm and on Sunday from 11am to 1pm. We also operate there a Meteorological Station providing daily climatic data to the Meteorological Office.
Annual Subscriptions: due 1st October. (New members joining after 30th April are covered until 30th September the following year):
Ordinary Members: £9 by Banker's Order, £10 by cash or cheque.
Junior Members (under 18 or in full- time education on 1st Oct): half ordinary rate.
Family Members: one and a half ordinary rate.
Country Members: (living over 30 miles away): half ordinary rate.
School Membership: £25.
With your agreement and provided that you are a tax-payer, individual subscriptions and any donations will be treated as Gift Aid donations, allowing the Society to recover tax.

(Number to be filled in by hand to foil hackers.) If the first payment is before 30th April, the second payment should be on the 1st Oct in the same year. If the first payment is after 30 April, a second payment is not necessary in the same year. This cancels any previous standing order to the Hampstead Scientific Society.
